Untitled, 2001, plastic-coated copper wire, acid etched fabric, 12'x 27'x 30'

This is a collaboration between Jennie Pakradooni and myself in an abandoned building in Fayetteville, AR. The building had been the Fayetteville train depot and was a living relic; having segregated waiting rooms and bathrooms.

We installed during the coldest months of December, stretching wires between the floor and the ceiling to form three concentric cylinders. Two sheets of acid-etched fabric formed the fourth, inner cylinder at which we shone bright halogen lights. Openings in the wire allowed viewers to wind their way toward the center and into the fabric column. The interior was a shadow play with the patterns from the fabric and shadows from other people outside of the fabric.

Once inside, the sculpture became a panopticon. The effect of the lights illuminated the surface of the fabric but did not block viewers from seeing out. Once in the center, one had anonymity.
